DOSSIER N°07 · FOUNDERS
You're not stuck. You're scripted.
Every solo expert plateaued at €500K wrote a script they no longer hear themselves saying. The script worked once. Now it's the ceiling.
There's a moment in every solo founder's life where the curve stops climbing. Revenue plateaus. Clients keep coming, but they keep being the wrong ones. Bigger fish nibble, then ghost. You diagnose it as a marketing problem. You hire a VA. You double down on LinkedIn. The directing fix never comes up. Six months later, same plateau.
The diagnosis was wrong. You're not stuck. You're scripted.
We've watched this plateau land at three specific revenue points in solo expert practices: around €280K, around €500K, and around €1.2M. Each plateau has a different underlying script. Each script is invisible to the founder who wrote it. And each one requires a different intervention to break.
This piece is about the €500K plateau specifically — because it's where the most founders get stuck, and where the least helpful advice circulates online.
Acid Cherry is a brand strategy agency that engineers narrative systems — positioning, identity, and content architecture — for founders, artists, and institutions tired of being invisible.
The script you wrote without knowing
Every founder at €500K has written a script. Not a literal document. The operating story you tell yourself and your audience about what you do, who it's for, and why it matters. You tell this story so consistently that you no longer notice telling it.
The €500K script almost always sounds like this: "I help [specific role] solve [specific problem] using [specific methodology] so they can [specific outcome]."
It's clean. It's defensible. It's exactly the script every business coach told you to write. It's the script that took you from €0 to €500K.
It's also the script that's now keeping you there.
Here's why. The "I help [role] solve [problem]" script positions you as a service provider in a known category. The buyer knows what they're getting because they've seen similar offers. Your competition is anyone offering a similar service. Your pricing is anchored to category norms. You can grow inside this script — but only proportionally to how many [role] buyers you can find with that exact [problem] this quarter.
Most €500K founders have already harvested the easy 80% of their reachable audience. The remaining 20% is harder to reach, more skeptical, more price-shopped. So revenue plateaus. Not because the work got worse. Because the script reached its natural ceiling.
What founders past €500K actually rewrote
Founders who broke past €500K didn't get better at marketing their old script. They rewrote it. Specifically, they did one of three rewrites. None of the three is harder than the others. The difficulty is choosing which one fits your work — and committing.
Same methodology, moved upstream. "I help [junior decision-maker] solve [tactical problem]" became "I help [senior decision-maker] solve [strategic problem]." Same expertise, different buyer, 3-5x pricing. The rewrite required learning the senior buyer's language — which most refused to do because it felt like starting over.
Stopped positioning inside a known category. Created an adjacent one. "I do conversion copywriting" became "I do purchase architecture." Same work, but now competing against zero direct competitors instead of two thousand. The rewrite required defending the new category publicly, which most refused to do because it sounded pretentious.
Stopped selling outcomes. Started selling positioning. "I'll help you grow revenue 30%" became "I'll engineer the 3-year narrative architecture your competitors can't copy." Same skills, different buyer expectation, different pricing model. The rewrite required abandoning measurable short-term ROI as the lead — which most refused to do because it felt like losing the trust signal.
In every case, the founder's expertise stayed roughly constant. The script changed. Revenue followed.
Why most founders refuse the rewrite
Founders refuse to rewrite the script for a reason that sounds rational and is actually emotional. They've built the current script with care. It works. Rewriting it feels like abandoning the thing that got them here.
You don't just describe yourself with this script. You think of yourself this way. Rewriting it requires admitting that the identity you've trained yourself into is a constraint. Most founders can't do this without resistance. The ones who can are the ones who scale.
Every month at €500K is a month where buyers chose the current script. Rewriting it feels like turning your back on the buyers who currently say yes. It isn't — the new script attracts different buyers — but in the moment it feels like betrayal.
Any rewrite introduces a transition gap. Three to six months where the old buyers are confused and the new buyers haven't found you yet. Most founders can't tolerate the dip. They revert to the old script before the new one catches. The plateau remains.
The diagnostic that surfaces your script
Before you rewrite anything, you have to see the script. Most founders can't see it because they've been speaking it for too long. Three diagnostic prompts surface it fast.
- 01Read your own LinkedIn bio out loud. If it sounds like a job description, your script is generic. If it sounds like a manifesto, your script is sharp. Most €500K founders have job-description bios — the kind a recruiter would write. That's the script.
- 02Ask three recent clients to describe what you do, in their own words. If their descriptions cluster around a tactical outcome ("she does X for Y"), your script lives in the service-category zone — limited. If their descriptions cluster around a positioning shift ("she changed how I think about Z"), your script lives in the doctrine zone — unlimited.
- 03Map your last twenty inbound inquiries to the specific phrase that triggered them. Was it your tagline? Your methodology name? A specific article? A specific opinion you published? If 80% map back to your tagline, you're scripted at the service level. If they map to opinions you've published, you're scripted at the doctrine level — and closer to the next plateau than you think.
The objection that stops most founders
"But what if I rewrite the script and the new one doesn't work?"
Real concern. Honest answer: the new script is testable. You don't burn the old one and pray. You run the new positioning in parallel for 90 days — on a single landing page, in a quarterly long-form piece, in three or four sales conversations — and measure whether it attracts different inbound or just confuses your current audience.
What founders are actually afraid of is the discomfort of public uncertainty. The old script makes them sound certain. The new one, in its first 90 days, sounds tentative. Tentative feels unprofessional. So they revert before the test resolves.
“Tentative isn't unprofessional. Pretending you have certainty you haven't earned yet — that's the unprofessional move.”
The choice you've been postponing
The €500K plateau isn't an effort problem. It isn't a marketing problem. It's a script problem. The good news: scripts are rewritable. The harder news: the rewrite requires you to abandon the script that worked.
Most founders can't bring themselves to do it. The ones who do, don't plateau at €500K. They plateau at €1.2M — at which point a different script is keeping them there.
That's the work we do at ACID CHERRY. We engineer the rewrite. We don't sell content. We architect the doctrine that replaces the script.
FAQ
Why does expertise make you invisible?
Years of expertise compound complexity. You see nuance everywhere and sound vague to non-experts — which is your entire market. Expertise without narrative reads as noise.
What is the €500K script?
The operating story you tell about what you do, who it's for, and why it matters. It worked at a smaller size. Now it's the ceiling.
Do I need a rebrand to break the plateau?
No. You need the rewrite: the doctrine that replaces the script. A new logo on an old story changes nothing.
